Ben Powell
Ben Powell is a composer and pianist and has just received his Honours degree majoring in Composition, at the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music, under the supervision of Dr Michael Williams.
Ben has listened to and loved classical music from a very early age and began learning piano when he was eight. From 2008 to 2014 Ben's works have been selected to be performed at the Nelson Composer's Workshop.
Ben appreciates many genres of music and enjoys composing in a wide range of styles. He has a particular interest in writing film scores.
In 2015 Ben was the recipient of the Lilburn Trust Competition Award in the Electroacoustic section. In 2014 Ben received a Lilburn Trust Competition Award (Merit) for his piano and voice composition The Ballad of Cecil, with lyrics and vocals by Cecily Shaw.
