Camryn Nel

Camryn Nel Camryn Nel is a composer and performer who began studying towards his Bachelor of Music in Composition at the University of Auckland in 2018. Currently finishing his third year of study, Camryn plans to do his honours and masters in music education after his undergraduate degrees.

Camryn plays in several ensembles around Auckland, including Howick Brass Band, UniBand, and West City Concert Band. As well as this, Camryn was selected as principal Timpani for the New Zealand Youth Symphonic Winds in 2020.

Camryn has been an active part of the Auckland music community since moving to the city in 2018. Since then, Camryn co-founded the University of Auckland Student Choir, on which he is now the assistant music director. Camryn also currently sits on the executive of the School of Music Students Association and is the 2021 president of UniBand.

He has taken part in various composition workshops and competitions. Camryn has twice been selected to have pieces workshopped in the APO Our Voice orchestral workshops and has taken part in events such as the Nelson Composer Workshop and the Llewelyn Jones Piano Composition Competition. In 2020, Camryn came second equal in the University of Auckland Douglas Lilburn Composition Competition with his piece Tears of Light for vocal octet.
